2006-12-19 News Release
BASF's partnership role in the automotive sector BASF leader comments that company divisions develop intelligent automotive solutions jointly and in close consultation with customers.
Raimar Jahn, head of BASF’s Global Automotive Steering Committee
and CEO of BASF Coatings AG and President of the BASF Group’s Coatings
Division since July 1, 2006, says: “We must continue to operate
at full speed in our efforts to make our customers even more successful.”
“Automobiles have always been regarded as extremely high-tech products
for which the latest materials are just about good enough,” declares
someone who should know what he’s talking about: Raimar Jahn, head
of BASF’s Global Automotive Steering Committee, CEO of BASF Coatings
AG and President of the BASF Group's Coatings Division - and therefore
a proven expert in everything relating to paints, plastics and chemical
products on today’s roads. The Global Automotive Steering Committee has become a very effective tool in communications between the global key accounts – automakers and tier 1 suppliers – and BASF. This has entailed ensuring that all the “players,” i.e., all of BASF’s divisions that are involved in the automotive industry, are on board. In my view, we have chosen the best approach for bringing together BASF’s comprehensive product and service provision and automotive customers operating around the world. In this way, BASF demonstrates its role as a partner to the automotive industry. We develop intelligent automotive solutions jointly and in close consultation with our customers – in a one-stop approach. Can you tell us how this works in practice? The customer’s contact person is the Global Key Account Team Leader who coordinates the direct contacts and activities between the customer and BASF. This person establishes the connection between the customer and the Steering Committee where all BASF’s automotive operations are brought together. This means that all actions relating to this customer can be coordinated extremely promptly with the Global Automotive Steering Committee, which is composed of representatives of the senior management of various divisions and units. What has been your experience with this procedure? This concept has proven itself in our experience as we receive a great deal of positive feedback from our customers. This is reflected, for example, in expanding order books as well as supplier awards. However, we need to discuss our extensive product portfolio in even greater detail and make our global capabilities and innovativeness even better known. We have to reinforce BASF’s profile to the automotive sector. How would you sum up the collaboration among divisions which “think” so differently and which often work alongside each other in other companies? Are there examples of synergy effects? One of the crucial tasks that BASF has set itself for the next 10 years is to help its customers to be more successful. The Global Key Account Teams are therefore charged with proactively approaching customers and discussing with them all the – supradivisional – issues defined in advance with the Steering Committee. A good example is the new development of an engineering plastic that can be coated directly on the paint line. This was developed jointly by BASF employees from R&D and from the Coatings and Performance Polymers divisions. What are your thoughts for the future? We must all contribute to ensuring that BASF is positioned uniformly
in a global framework within the automotive industry – with uniform
messages and utilizing synergy effects. All activities must be designed
to be customer-focused. If we succeed in this and continue to underline
our strength, i.e., our efficient operations across divisional boundaries
and national frontiers, we will be able to expand our position as a strong
partner to the automotive industry even further. We have chosen “BASF
Automotive Solutions. Performance Passion Success” as the motto
for this joint approach to the automotive industry: All the divisions
throughout the entire BASF Group are thus signed up to a uniform response
to the industry.
