New polystyrene plastics for refrigerators

BASF polystyrene plastics receive stamp of approval from leading manufacturers to make polystyrene ESCRimo perfect for use in refrigerators.

BASF has developed a new polystyrene (PS) grade that is particularly suitable for manufacturing refrigerator linings. The product, called PS ESCRimo*, is much more resistant to stress crack formation than its predecessor on the market, the PS 2710 grade, and its notched impact strength (Charpy) is almost 50 percent higher. Sampling quantities of the new polystyrene plastics are already available; the predecessor variant will be dropped from the product line in July of 2007.

In polystyrene, BASF supplies standard and impact-resistant grades for use in injection molding and extrusion, thermoforming, blow molding and injection blow molding.

“Even a mature product class like polystyrene remains the focus of our ongoing upgrading efforts,” explains Hans-Dieter Schwaben, polystyrene product manager at BASF in Ludwigshafen. BASF’s polystyrene product line is very lean nowadays, but every single grade is constantly being adapted to the customers’ requirements so that the products always achieve an optimal cost-benefit ratio. ESCRimo lends itself for food packaging as well, thanks to its resistance to fats and oils.

Tailor-made material properties and trouble-free processing as well as enormous cost-efficiency make polystyrene plastics perfect for use in refrigerators.

Thanks to polystyrene plastics ESCRimo, impact-resistant grades that are particularly resistant to stress cracking are available for the production of refrigerator inserts and door paneling, which is directly back-foamed with polyurethane systems.

BASF’s impact-resistant glossy grades are preferably used in the accessories sector and as a basic material for glossy-layer co-extrusion.

The transparent and brilliant grades polystyrene 158 K and 165 H set the standard in terms of the cost-efficient production of transparent vegetable drawers and other accessories.
