Design and Packaging at BASF Plastics pre K 2007 conference

Biodegradable plastics and plastics for packaging based on renewable raw materials are a constant part of research and development activities at BASF.

After the market introduction of Ecovio* LBX 8145 beginning of 2006, first lab samples of the new Ecovio L Foam will be available in October 2007. The material is designed for foamed food trays and fast-food boxes. Like its predecessor the new Ecovio L Foam consists of Ecoflex*, BASF’s biodegradable polyester, and the renewable raw material polylactic acid (PLA).

A new Styrolux* grade (SBC: Styrol-Butandien-Copolymer) has been developed for shrink sleeves in beverage bottle packaging. Films made of the new Styrolux HS 70 have a significantly higher final shrinkage than all other SBC products in the market. This allows form-fitting sheathing even for bottles with complex geometries and thus makes possible attractive and individual product design.

Together with BASF and the furniture company Plank the internationally acclaimed industrial designer Konstantin Grcic has designed and produced an innovative chair within the record time of only one year. The chair combines high design standards with intelligent production via injection molding: The cantilever chair "MYTO“ is entirely made of Ultradur* High Speed, the very easy-flowing PBT (polybutylene terephtalete) from BASF and will be unveiled on K fair’s opening day at BASF’s stand by the designer himself.

New BASF plasticizers
Hexamoll* DINCH is an innovative plasticizer for sensitive applications. The additive is one of the most thoroughly investigated substances in the world and has an outstandingly good toxicological profile. Accordingly, Hexamoll DINCH is suitable for use in children’s toys made of PVC, in food packaging and also in medical technology.

Shrink film used in the packaging market
How can you quickly and efficiently turn a bare bottle into an individualized object that appeals to the senses? Shrink film made of BASF’s new plastic, Styrolux HS 70, a styrene-butadiene block copolymer (SBC), can be used to completely wrap bottles, even those with odd shapes. BASF developers have given this new material precisely the temperature behavior that is needed for this type of packaging.

Food-product trays made of Ecovio L Foam
There is growing interest in plastic products made of renewable raw materials. For this reason, BASF is currently working on a refinement of Ecovio LBX, its biodegradable and biobased plastic. The new material will be called Ecovio L Foam and will be configured in such a way that a foam manufacturer can turn it into foam without having to make any substantial modifications to the XPS machine (XPS: extruded polystyrene foam). This product will then be further processed into fast-food boxes and food-product trays made of foam. BASF will be showing the first laboratory samples of this new material at the K plastics trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany in October of 2007. The company intends to introduce the product onto the market over the course of 2008.

There is also news from designfabrik** (design factory), BASF’s plastics service platform for designer which is located in Ludwigshafen since May 2006. The designfabrik’s technical support and advice in connection with the choice of material, processing technique and color has now been extended to all BASF plastics and includes Styrenics as well as Engineering Plastics and Polyurethanes.

The foam Basotect* has also aroused designers’ interest. The company Walter Knoll from German Herrenberg has developed the first fire-proof sofa by using a core of BASF’s speciality foam. The flame-resistant melamine resin foam will be part of the whole upholstered design furniture series KITE 560 which is particularly well-suited for furbishing public spaces where fire protection regulations are very strict.
