BASF to raise prices for engineering plastics in Europe

BASF will be raising its prices in Europe for engineering plastics, compounded polyamides and polybutylene terephthalate by 150 euros per metric ton.

Price increases to take effect as of October 1, 2007 and include compounded polyamides (PA) Ultramid*, Miramid*, Capron* and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) Ultradur* plastics product lines.

The prices for specialties from the engineering plastics product line will be going up by 300 euros per metric ton. Through increased productivity and efficiency as well as through energy-saving measures, product innovations and newly developed applications, BASF has endeavored in recent years to absorb the continuous shrinking of the margins in the realm of engineering plastics and to keep prices stable to the greatest extent possible. These efforts, however, have not been sufficient to compensate for the unsatisfactory earnings situation. Continuing to safeguard this field of operations means that BASF will have to invest in applications technology, in research and development as well as in new facilities. This is only possible with adequate margins.

Engineering plastics such as polyamide (PA) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) are used everywhere in the technical realm and also in daily life, in automotive construction, in electronics and electrical engineering, in machine construction as well as in the household, office and recreation sectors.
