Polymers manufacturer sponsors PlastiVan tour

A major manufacturer of superabsorbent and liquid polymers sponsors PlastiVan the traveling chemistry exhibit making three stops in the Ascension Parish.

The “PlastiVan” will make its annual trip to Ascension Parish in December, when the internationally-recognized education program will start a weeklong tour of the parish’s three middle schools. The visits are sponsored by BASF’s Geismar, Louisiana site, that manufactures a wide range of chemicals used in hundreds of consumer products.

The PlastiVan’s Ascension Parish tour will begin on Dec. 4 with Gonzales Middle School. It will then go to Galvez Middle School on Dec. 6, and Dutchtown Middle School on Dec. 7.

The PlastiVan is one of three “science on wheels” vans that travel throughout the United States teaching students, educators and the public about the chemistry, history, manufacturing and environmental issues involved with making plastics. The program, which aims to show students the roles plastics play in their everyday lives, is provided through the National Plastics Center & Museum in Leominster, Mass.

“These experiments make science more interesting for students, and they are a great way to show children and adults alike how important the chemical products made by companies in our parish are to life as we know it,” said Mike Cohen, Senior Vice President and General Manager of BASF’s Geismar site. “Sponsoring the PlastiVan’s visits to Ascension Parish schools is another way BASF reaches out to residents of our parish.”

During lab sessions, students will participate in experiments that include making “slime” and nylon thread using liquid polymers and laundry detergent, demonstrating the flexibility of polymers by sticking a wooden skewer through a balloon without bursting it, and learning more about the “chemistry of diapers.” BASF is a major manufacturer of superabsorbent
polymers (SAP), a key ingredient in baby diapers. SAP is capable of absorbing and retaining many times its weight in water and is best known for its use in disposable diapers.

The PlastiVan’s tour is one of a number of programs BASF sponsors for the Louisiana Ascension Parish public schools. Galvez Middle School is BASF’s adopted school and the company provides the school with classroom supplies and equipment, as well as guest speakers and judges for special events. BASF is also the largest contributor to the Ascension Fund, which provides teachers at Ascension Parish public schools with additional resources to teach subjects ranging from language arts to science.
