BASF automotive coatings
Excellent cooperation with Land Rover
Important automotive OEM coatings related actions for the Land Rover
plant at Solihull in England are carried out by the 23 BASF employees
who work on site.
BASF Coatings supplies the automotive OEM coatings for the Land Rover
plant at Solihull in England and rewards the confidence entrusted by Land
Rover with its expertise.
"We have enjoyed a 5 year relationship with Land Rover, taking care
of all materials for pretreatment and application of surfaces,”
explains Mike Grandy, Key Account Manager for Ford of Europe. Units are
produced in a two-shifts-per-day operation, and they include the models
Range Rover, Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Defender. The BASF Coatings’
team on site is well equipped for their job: In addition to the Account
Manager, the Process Leader, the Materials Controller, the Application
Technician, and the employee responsible for the Quality Operating System
(QOS), 16 other BASF Coatings technicians are working on site. The team
is in constant contact with the customer and can address its needs directly.

BASF Coatings supplies Land Rover with paints for cathodic electrodeposition
(CathoGuard 310), 15 primers, 21 basecoats, and 2 clearcoats. In addition,
BASF Coatings is responsible for 13 pre-paint application process steps.
However, it was not only its paint competence that contributed to Land
Rover's success. BASF Coatings is also integrated in current workflows
at Land Rover and Ford in Total Value Management. The coatings expert
also uses fresh ideas to suggest potential improvements or cost-cutting
within the overall workflows. Last year BASF Coatings was nominated for
the Henry Ford Award as part of Ford’s global assessment program
for its idea, the only one to be put forward from the Solihull site. The
NIR® MICROSPOT REPAIR System for OEM clearcoats could lead to significant
costs savings each year. Minor repairs are carried out directly at the
paintline, and now it only takes five minutes for coatings to dry and
harden, rather than the 30 minutes required previously.
BASF Coatings AG , part of the BASF Group, develops, produces and markets
a high-quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings, automotive
refinishes and industrial coatings as well as decorative paints, and also
the processes needed to apply them.
