BASF will sponsor the second annual Canadian Renewable Fuels Summit, to be held December 13 through 15, 2005, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.

"With the high cost of crude oil today, interest in renewable biodiesel fuel is increasing substantially," said Susan Jackson, Alcoholates Product Manager for BASF's Inorganics business in North America. "Public and government awareness of the benefits of biodiesel fuel are crucial to its successful adoption and growth. Since this summit is a key component of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association's efforts to inform both audiences, BASF is pleased to provide support."

Key topics to be covered during the summit include Canadian and American biofuels policy, emerging technologies for biodiesel and ethanol, biodiesel use in fleets, ethanol international markets, choosing feedstock for biodiesel, wheat based ethanol production and project financing.

Founded in 1994, the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote renewable fuels for automotive transportation through consumer awareness and government liaison activities. The CRFA membership is comprised of representatives from all levels of the ethanol and biodiesel industry, including corn and cellulose ethanol producers, biodiesel producers, fuel technology researchers, agricultural associations, and environmental organizations concerned with air quality.

BASF is the world's leading provider of high quality alcoholates, such as sodium methylate, used as sophisticated catalysts for more efficient biodiesel production. When used instead of sodium hydroxide, they make the conversion process shorter and more convenient, and they increase the yield of the resultant biodiesel fuel and glycerol.

Use of BASF's sodium methylate produces crude glycerine that is a valuable by-product. More information about BASF's line of biodiesel production catalysts can be obtained by visiting the BASF exhibit at the summit.

BASF's inorganic products can be found in electronics, computers, automotive air bags, respiratory and environmental protection equipment, agricultural chemicals, plastics, flavors and fragrances, polymers, and more.
