BASF exhibits new capabilities at ICE 2006

BASF will demonstrate how the combined strengths of three industry leaders can create new opportunities for coatings formulators at the International Coatings Expo.

At the International Coatings Expo (ICE), Nov. 1-3 at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., visitors to the BASF Booth 826 will see, for the first time, the broad portfolio of technologies and products for the coatings industry created by BASF’s recent acquisitions of Engelhard and Johnson Polymer. The company is also launching Acronal Optive 350, a new acrylic resin for high-gloss paints that helps formulators meet emerging low volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations while delivering key functional benefits.

“ICE 2006 is the perfect venue to demonstrate how BASF’s expanded capabilities can help coatings formulators to be more successful in the face of current industry challenges, especially concerning environmental compliance and ‘green’ technologies,” said Gerry Podesta, Group Vice President of BASF’s Performance Chemicals business in North America. “By combining BASF’s existing capabilities with the products and technology that we acquired with Engelhard and Johnson Polymer we have created a powerful portfolio that can help formulators of coatings and printing systems for architectural, industrial, automotive and wood applications to make their products better.”

BASF will showcase a complete portfolio of resins, pigments, and additives that are suitable for use in formulating:
· low to zero VOC coating systems,
· industrial solvent-borne coatings,
· wood and hardboard primers,
· concrete coatings,
· acid-cure and baked coatings systems,
· multi-purpose coating applications that require enhanced performance, such as wetting, de-foaming, dispersing, and adhesion promotion, and
· light-fastness, heat stability and weatherability applications.

”Considering the architectural paint industry’s need to meet more stringent air regulations, the commercial launch of Acronal Optive 350 at ICE will be very good news,” said Cenan Ozmeral, Group Vice President for BASF’s Functional Polymers business in North America. “Providing equal or better performance in interior and exterior high-gloss paints compared to high VOC emulsions, it can help formulators to meet tough low VOC regulations and deliver the performance that end-users demand, including freeze-thaw resistance, high depth of image, excellent block resistance and high scrub.”

In addition to Acronal Optive 350, innovative technologies that will be on display include:
· low VOC 100% acrylic emulsion technology for architectural coatings,
· pigments that change color as the visual angle of the viewer shifts,
· luster pigments that impart a liquid metal look,
· effect pigments for exterior and interior automotive applications,
· a point-of-sale system with the ability to make custom colors in the paint can from dry, powder concentrates, and
· heat management software to predict the Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) of coatings using a computer -- saving lab resources and expenses.

ICE combines the largest North American exhibition of raw materials, equipment, and services for the coatings manufacturing and construction chemicals industry—the International Coatings Expo—with eight valuable Preshow Short Courses and the industry’s state-of-the-art technical conference—FutureCoat!

Your attendance in New Orleans will help to rebuild a city and a region that truly needs our industry’s financial and emotional support—and will provide you with access to the best the coatings industry has to offer!
