Price hikes for styrenic plastics

European prices for the styrene polymers ABS and SAM plastics to increase due to rising raw material and energy costs.

For the month of October of this year BASF will raise its European prices for the styrene polymers Terluran* (ABS) and Luran* (SAN) by €100 per metric ton. This measure is necessary against the background of increased raw material and energy costs. The margins for these two product groups are very unsatisfactory.

Both product groups belong to BASF’s range of styrenic plastics commodities. Terluran is the trade name for BASF’s ABS (acrylonitrile/styrene/butadiene copolymer). BASF’s styrene/acrylonitrile-copolymer (SAN) is marketed under the trade name Luran. Both plastics are used in a wide variety of household, office, automotive, sports, cosmetics, medical technology and leisure items.

A new product joins the service package for medical technology. Since February of this year, BASF has been offering Terluran HD-15 special plastics along with a service package specifically tailored to medical technology. This ABS is characterized by its improved chemical resistance. Typical applications include inhalation equipment, such as the easyhaler featured right. The medical technology service package includes long-term constancy of formulation and global approvals.

Specialty Plastics replace sheet steel. F-tronic, a manufacturer of electrical installation products, has replaced the sheet steel used in small distributor boxes with Luran S. The reason for this material substitution is that these plastics proved to be a much sturdier choice for the doors and frames of the boxes.
