2006-10-10 News Release
Superabsorbent polymers production site reduces workforce BASF announces personnel reduction at Aberdeen, Mississippi superabsorbent polymers production site, which is part of their planned manufacturing platform consolidation.
BASF said that it would be shutting down one of the company’s superabsorbent
polymers (SAP) production lines at its Aberdeen site by the end of 2006,
in advance of the planned closure of the entire site in 2007. “We regret the impact that this decision may have on employees and their families,” said Leigh Blair-Guin, Manager of BASF’s Aberdeen, Miss., site. “This decision is in no way a reflection of the hard work, dedication and professionalism of our employees. We will work with our affected employees to help them locate other employment opportunities within BASF, or we will provide them with the appropriate severance compensation and out-placement services.” In 2004, BASF announced that it would close its Aberdeen, Miss., and Portsmouth, Va., operations in 2007 when BASF relocates its superabsorbent polymers production to a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at the company’s manufacturing site in Freeport, Texas. The new plant will begin operation in the first half of 2007. In the meantime, the Aberdeen site will continue to operate the remaining SAP lines there until production is moved to Freeport and the Aberdeen facility is decommissioned. “While we had hoped that we would not be announcing personnel reductions
at the Aberdeen site until next year, we found it necessary to make this
business decision now,” said Cenan Ozmeral, Group Vice President
for Functional Polymers
