Segway Human Transporter
Turns on Nylon Wheels

Industries turn to BASF for performance engineering grade resin
WYANDOTTE, Mich., USA-- September 15, 2004 -- Jobwerx News
-- Segway LLC, Bedford, N.H., and molder C&J Industries, Inc., Meadville,
Pa., have specified BASF's Ultramid 8334G nylon 6 grade as the material
of choice to produce wheels for the Segway Human Transporter (HT).
The Segway HT has captivated consumers and businesses alike as one of
the most innovative products in recent memory through its ability to
intuitively move forward and backward by responding to the rider's position
rather than using an accelerator or brakes.
Although graceful and agile, the Segway HT is designed to operate on
a variety of terrains in virtually any environment, including grass,
hills and dirt. As such, its components must be able to withstand a
wide range of harsh conditions, including vibration, varying temperatures,
moisture and other environmental elements. To meet these performance
requirements, Segway and C&J turned to BASF's Engineering Plastics group.
"As enjoyable and unique as it is to ride, the Segway HT isn't just
about fun transportation," said Ron Reich, Director of Mechanical Design
Engineering for Segway. "We had to make the Segway HT tough, and Ultramid
nylon has the durability, strength, stiffness and impact resistance
needed for rugged use. BASF's 8334G grade can also be custom colored
for our wheel designs and has the lot-to-lot consistency that enables
this component to be efficiently manufactured."
