Bayer plastics makes huge screen diagonals possible So far conventional plastics have stunted the growth of LCD monitors, as the thin diffuser plastics sheets used in their production have a tendency to warp.
Sales of flat screen TVs are booming and LCD sets will soon have completely replaced conventional cathode ray televisions. Plastics materials experts from Bayer MaterialScience explain how a high-purity grade of Makrolon* with outstanding optical properties has made possible huge screen diagonals while ensuring optimal brightness for liquid crystal displays. The prices for LCD televisions are dropping and flat-screen TVs are already a fixture in many living rooms. One trend has already become apparent: customers go more and more for large format units. However, to produce an image on the matt screen of an LCD monitor that is uniformly bright and sharp despite growing screen diagonals, new plastics materials are needed. The diffuser sheets made out of conventional plastics used to date have a tendency to warp, causing distortion of the picture.
Scientists at Bayer MaterialScience have now succeeded in producing a high purity plastics grade of Makrolon which makes possible the manufacture of flat screen televisions in unprecedented sizes. In what is called the backlight unit (BLU) of an LCD TV, diffuser sheets made of this tried and true plastic increase the light yield enormously and ensure that viewers get a razor sharp image on the liquid-crystal display. The proven Bayer plastics ensures that the backlight unit of an LCD TV delivers razor-sharp pictures and optimum brightness. The scientists are currently still occupied with adding microscopic particles to the plastics mixture in order to optimize the light scatter, but work has already started on the next generation of diffuser sheets that will contain hardly any scattering pigments but will guide the light specifically to the LCD display through a micro-surface structure. The structured diffuser sheets thus enhance design freedom and reduce costs at the same time. Bayer Sheet Korea already supplies two major TV manufacturers with the first generation of the new material and thus covers a large part of the market for LCD TVs. Says Dr. Claus Rudiger, a chemist for Bayer, “The future of Makrolon for LCD TVs looks very promising indeed.” * Trademark of Bayer MaterialScience.
