Polyurethanes ensure good noise insulation

A German company is investing in a polyurethanes system solution that offers the company a great deal of flexibility in design and construction for molding compressor covers.

Large, high-quality moldings have been successfully manufactured for some time using the polyurethane integral skin foam Baydur* 60 from Bayer MaterialScience AG. Now this versatile material is also being used in access covers for screw-type compressors, a new product series from CompAir Drucklufttechnik GmbH of Simmern, Germany, which are used primarily in medical applications and filling technology.

The access covers for the L 15-22 grades are produced by E. Rinderer PUR-Tech in Altenrhein, Switzerland. Wall thicknesses varying between 3 and 14 millimeters and the associated complex flow paths present no problems for this polyurethane. The eight threaded bushings foamed into the molding enable a high degree of functional integration and cost-effectiveness even with small and medium-sized series. Two seals and sheet steel angles are then fitted, allowing the molded part, which measures 800 x 700 x 550 millimeters, to be supplied to the customer, CompAir, already assembled.

The new screw-type compressors from CompAir Drucklufttechnik GmbH, featured right, with integrated dryer were designed for customers requiring a compact, compressed air center that takes up only limited space and is delivered ready for use. The access cover made of the polyurethane integral skin foam Baydur *60 from Bayer MaterialScience offers a high level of mechanical robustness combined with light weight and excellent sound insulation.

Thanks to its sandwich structure - consisting of a cellular core and a solid outer layer - Baydur* 60 ensures that the hood is both mechanically robust and lightweight. The material thus perfectly meets the requirement of easy transportability for the new compressed air center with integrated dryer. "What’s more, only polyurethanes ensure good noise insulation, which is hugely important for our customers," says Peter Hilgert, buyer at CompAir Drucklufttechnik GmbH.

The outstanding surface quality of Baydur 60 also enables high-quality coating of the moldings. Compressed air centers produce a maximum pressure of 13 bar. They do not occupy any more space than the standard L series from CompAir.
