Can different tests
really help you to make sensible career choices?
There are a variety of popular tests that can measure your intelligence,
aptitude, skills and judge your ability to do well in any given career.
Will they really help you to understand your personality more than you
already do? Yes!
Once you have that confidence that you know you're in the right field,
you should be relentless in your job search. Don't be afraid to let it
show through in your resume and when you talk to employers as well. Employers
like to hire people who are confident in their abilities and really want
to be in the position they're in.
Of course to be able to get in front of employers, you need them to know
about you. This is why we recommend getting your resume on all the job
boards as a good first step in getting noticed. If you sign up for ResumeDirector,
they will put your resume on over 90 job sites for you. Even if you want
to post your resume on all the job boards yourself, you should check out
the list of job boards under the "Sites We Post You To" option
on the ResumeDirector home page just to be sure you have posted your resume

At a Fork in the Road?
If you’re at a fork in the road and really don’t know which
step to take, career testing can help to:
* Match your personality to the best type of job for you
* Make the best career choices
* Choose the best work environment
* Enhance your job satisfaction
* Teach you more about who you are and what you like
Tests can be used to give a person an indication of what jobs match your
personality type and therefore what careers you might have an aptitude
for. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular tests.
Myers-Briggs
This is a test to identify personal preferences. This system was developed
during World War II by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs
Myers. This model is based on four preferences. These are: Where you direct
your energy, how you process information, how you make decisions and how
you organize your life.
Strong Interest Inventory Test
This test is more accurately classed as an inventory test, which helps
measures a person’s interest against the interests of people who
are already in the profession the person is showing an interest in. This
test was originally devised in the 1920s and has been revised many times
since. It’s used today to help people understand what they like
and don’t like about their jobs.
Its premise is based on six different themes: realistic, investigative,
enterprising, conventional, social, artistic. Thomas-Kilmann Conflict
(TKI) Mode Instrument. This test helps people to understand their conflict
management processes. Conflict, when managed, can lead to great change
and improvement. This test shows you five different conflict styles. You
can learn which your primary method is and when to use it. Through this
testing you will also learn about your other conflict styles and when
to use them to resolve conflicts.
Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential (MAPP)
This test attempts to measure a person’s motivation for given areas
of work and will describe the persons temperament, aptitude, interests
and learning styles.
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter II
This testing is based on David Keirsey’s Temperament theory whereby
people can be sorted into four groups. These include Artisans, Guardians,
Rationals and Idealists. Then within each of these groups there are four
variants or ‘character types.’ The purpose of this testing
is to gain understanding and insight into selecting a career and choosing
the right work environment.
Other testing
Testing is also available in many other areas such as intelligence and
personality. Both areas are important to assess on a realistic level when
making major career decisions.
Let’s take a quick look.
Aptitude tests - help to determine your abilities and skills within certain
types of work. Intelligence tests - are also known as IQ tests and measures
a person’s mental skills. Personality tests - help to highlight
your personal characteristics and your emotional stability. They are a
good self assessment tool. Simple tests like the Color quiz can be taken
online whereas others are given by a counselor for better interpretation
of the results.
Nowadays, you can take several of these tests online. A quality test we
recommend is the MAPP assessment test. You can find out about MAPP by
visiting this web address: http://www.jobwerx.com/MAPP.html
If you are serious about learning more about yourself and what career
changes you should make, this is an interesting place to start.
