New low gloss acetal
polymers for exterior components
The new grade acetal copolymer from a major engineering polymers group
lets automakers and other manufacturers create exterior components with
a contemporary, low gloss look.
Ticona, the engineering polymers business of Celanese Corporation , has
introduced the first low-gloss, black acetal copolymer for exterior use.
The new grade, Hostaform* WR140LG acetal copolymer, which has up to 80
percent less gloss than standard UV-stabilized acetals, gives automakers
and other manufacturers the ability to create exterior components having
the contemporary low-gloss look consumers value.

copolymers.
This specialty grade of acetal provides 60° gloss readings of less
than 3 percent, depending on mold texture. In addition, it undergoes relatively
little appearance change after extended UV exposure and does not form
a chalky pigment residue on the surface as do many weatherable acetals.
"This grade extends our successful auto-interior, low-gloss acetal
line so we can meet the requirements of major automakers for low-gloss
exterior components," says Marcus Hayes, Product Marketing Manager
– Celcon* and Hostaform. "This grade retains all the benefits
associated with acetal, including durability, creep resistance, dimensional
stability, chemical resistance and flowability."
Hostaform WR140LG is targeted for use in such auto exterior applications
as trim elements, windshield wiper and door handle components, window
rail end caps, and antenna mounts. Other markets for the new grade include
outdoor sprinkler systems, recreational vehicles, all-terrain vehicles
and outdoor furniture.
