Summit, New Jersey; Kelsterbach, Germany -- A study of formed blisters
by Tekni-Plex, a major packaging film supplier, found that cyclic olefin
copolymer-based films can offer equal or better moisture protection
in blister packaging compared to certain structures of polyvinyl chloride
(PVC)-based films having barrier layers of either polyvinylidene chloride
(PVDC) or polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE).
The study evaluated five Tekniflex® commercial film structures. Two
of these had 300µ layers of Topas® COC from Ticona, the technical polymers
business of Celanese AG (FSE: CZZ). These two films were coextruded
with PP and/or HDPE. The other three film structures had 250µ layers
of PVC and barriers of either PVDC (90 g/m˛) or PCTFE (15µ and 23µ).
