Packaging innovation honored by Kooperationspreis

Coordination between partners offering a complete packaging solution of time temperature indicators wins process innovation prize.

Ciba Specialty Chemicals and Bizerba have won the 2nd Prize in the Kooperationspreis for Process Innovation with their joint development of an integrated and complete solution for the application of Time Temperature Indicators (TTIs) labels straight onto packaging. The packaging solution covers all steps from label printing to fully automated production and combines labelling, charging and UV filter application in one step. TTIs visualize the accumulated chill-chain history of perishable goods, offering a freshness check at a glance, increasing consumer convenience and confidence, and enhancing reputation of brands.

The Kooperationspreis is sponsored by ministries in the German States of Niedersachsen and Nordrhein-Westfalen and honors the most innovative and commercial business cooperations in the Agriculture and Food Industry. Prizes are offered for Product Innovation and for Process Innovation. In 2007, a field of 52 projects from over 200 companies were submitted for consideration.

The jury was impressed by the degree of coordination between the partners, as well as the other companies involved at every step of the development process. The success of the cooperation depended on the specific expertise of each partner, neither of which could have succeeded alone.

The TTIs themselves were developed by Ciba in cooperation with Freshpoint and are marketed under the brand name OnVu*. They are currently supplied as labels and will in the future also be available as printing inks for application straight on the packaging.

OnVu TTIs show clearly whether the chill chain of a packaged product has been maintained, by recording the effects on the product of temperature fluctuations over time. By providing essential information on chill-chain history, TTIs can help to optimize shelf life, since suppliers and retailers will no longer need to discard products prematurely to cover for potential spoilage, caused, for example, by incorrect storage. Consumers, in turn, can check at a glance whether perishable products have been correctly transported and stored.

FreshPoint, Switzerland, is active in innovation in the area of smart packaging and the first product to be commercialized is a novel pigment-based time-temperature indicator.
