MOUNT OLIVE, N.J., April 15, 2004 -- BASF will increase prices
for its entire product line of styrenic copolymer resins in North America
by $0.06 per pound, effective May 1, 2004. This action is in addition
to the two previous price increases BASF implemented for these materials
earlier this year.
The resins included in this price increase are Terluran® ABS (acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene),
Luran® S ASA (acrylonitrile/styrene/acrylate), Luran SC ASA/PC (polycarbonate),
Luran SAN (styrene/acrylonitrile/copolymer) and Terlux® MABS (methyl
methacrylate/ABS).
"ABS resins have become more of a commodity, and pricing for styrenic
copolymers has been on a downward trend for the past 15 years due to
supply and demand factors and productivity improvements," said Herman
Savenije, Director of BASF's Styrenic Copolymers business in North America.
"However, raw material and energy costs to manufacture styrenic copolymers,
as well as costs to transport these resins to our customers, have gone
up substantially for the last 18 months -- with a significant spike
over the past four months. We foresee no short-term relief from these
conditions and must, therefore, implement this price increase."
BASF's styrenic copolymer resins are used to manufacture a broad range
of products that include weatherable housing and construction applications,
automotive end uses, electrical and electronic products, appliances,
lawn and garden equipment, packaging, sporting goods and general injection
molding applications.
