Ciba Chemicals sponsors pulp and paper research New printing and paper science professorship in Finland sponsored by Ciba Specialty Chemicals with focus on physico-chemical properties of paper surfaces and interfaces.
Dr Jouko Peltonen has been appointed to a new professorship in printing
and paper science sponsored by Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Based at Finland’s
Abo Akademi University, the position will focus on deepening scientific
understanding of factors that influence paper printability, particularly
physico-chemical properties of surfaces and interfaces that play a critical
role in the printing process. Professor Peltonen, an expert in surface
and colloid chemistry, will assume the position on October 1, 2006.
Fritz Herren, Head of Research & Development in Ciba Specialty Chemicals’ Water & Paper Treatment Segment, adds: “Ciba’s partnership with Abo Akademi reflects our strong commitment to paper research and the Finnish paper industry. We aim to foster further technological developments in paper, helping improve efficiency and profitability in the industry. We believe that a better understanding of the complex interactions that take place in paper-making and paper-coating will bring tangible benefits all along the value chain, from chemical supplier to press room. Professor Peltonen’s expertise in surface and colloid chemistry makes him the right person to shed new light on this research area.”
The five-year professorship will focus on improving understanding, mastery and control of paper printability, particularly the physico-chemical aspects of surfaces and interfaces. The position will cover research areas aimed at producing a better paper sheet as well as novel ways to assess and improve the way paper performs in the printing process. It will also explore novel surface properties and even new functionalities that could help the paper and graphics industries optimize and differentiate their offerings. Jouko Peltonen (45) earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from Abo Akademi University in 1994. Since 1995, he has served as project manager in the university’s Department of Physical Chemistry, running projects in the fields of biosensing films, paper coatings and printing. He has also held positions as research fellow at the Academy of Finland and senior lecturer at Abo Akademi. Professor Peltonen has received several prizes for his teaching and research. Ciba Specialty Chemicals’ partnership with Abo Akademi University follows on its acquisition of the Finland-based Raisio Chemicals in 2004. Find Information about Ciba Specialty Chemicals.
