Ciba Specialty Chemicals opens new melamine polyphosphate plant in Lampertheim, Germany for halogen free flame retardants production.

Ciba Specialty Chemicals has opened its new production plant for Ciba* MELAPUR* 200 (melamine polyphosphate) to meet increased global demand for this halogen free flame retardant. Giordano Righini, Head Segment Plastic Additives, inaugurated the plant which is located at the company’s Lampertheim production site in Germany.

The trend towards more stringent requirements for flame retardant plastics, with concerns about increased regulatory requirements for halogenated flame retardants, has increased the development of and demand for non halogenated alternatives.

MELAPUR 200 offers several benefits over brominated or chlorinated flame retardants among others because it is free of halogens, and does not require antimony or any other heavy metals as a synergist.

“Demand for MELAPUR 200 is growing rapidly due to an increasing number of customer approvals. With this new plant, we are able to serve our customers even better and be their partner of choice for further innovations. MELAPUR 200 is an important building block in our strategy to grow our flame retardant activities. It has already opened new opportunities in several product-market-combinations, for example, in the electronics and transportation industry,“ says Giordano Righini, Head Segment Plastic Additives, Ciba Specialty Chemicals.

MELAPUR 200 was originally developed to suit the high processing temperatures associated with compounding glass fiber reinforced polyamides. However, in recent years, MELAPUR 200, with its high thermal stability and low water solubility, has been found to be very effective in a variety of other polymer substrates, either on its own or as a synergistic component in flame retardant formulations.

MELAPUR 200 is part of the Ciba Melapur* product family, which also consists of MELAPUR MC (melamine cyanurate) and MELAPUR MP (melamine phosphate). MELAPUR is used primarily in a variety of polymers for electrical and electronic applications for power distribution (e.g., switches, connectors, cables, terminal blocks) which can be used in large and small household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment and various other industries.

The effectiveness of Ciba MELAPUR 200 (added in the right sample) as a halogen-free flame retardant for a variety of polymer substrates is demonstrated in a simple burn test. (shown at left <- <-)
