London, U.K. -- Jobwerx News-- Martin Hemberg, a post-graduate
student, has developed a computational tool called genr8, with advisory
services provided by Una-May O'Reilly and Peter Testa, which creates
organic looking surfaces.
The concepts and tool are part of the work by the Emergent Design Group
at MIT. The goal was to provide architects with access to creative surface
design by giving them influence over generative processes. A generative
process is the activity of iteratively executing some encoding that
creates and then modifies an artifact. In the generative process we
chose, what was most intriguing and of use to architects is a model
of cellular growth interacting with an environment.
The tool exploits a growth algorithm that mimics nature using evolutionary
computation technology - an area inspired by the evolution of biological
life. Because the programme is based on nature, rather than following
a set of man-made design rules, the surfaces grow holistically instead
of incrementally. 'A good example is a human arm. It doesn't grow one
centimetre a month starting from the shoulder, but instead it started
from a baby arm and all parts grow in parallel,' says Hemberg.
