PIPE SEALANT AND PLASTIC
WELDER FORM BONDS
Manufacturing News Center
August 7, 2004 -- DANVERS, Mass., (USA) -- Jobwerx News
-- Flex Bond pipe sealant ideal for joining hoses to rigid PVC couplings
and Plastic Welder SD structural sandable adhesive for plastic surfaces
from Devcon.
Flex
Bond is a two-component methacrylate polymer which is activated
by spraying an activator over the adhesive from Devcon, part of ITW
Performance Polymers. The new sealant bonds flexible piping made of
PVC, ABS, and many other plastics. It forms extremely flexible bonds
that are ideal for joining hoses to rigid PVC couplings. Flex Bond requires
no mixing, attains functional cure in 1 hour at room temperature, and
withstands service temperatures to 200°F.
Once the methacrylate polymer has been applied to one of the two surfaces
to be joined, the activator can be sprayed on top of the polymer or
onto the other surface. The curing cycle begins when the polymer comes
in contact with the activator. The curing cycle starts and bonds in
15 minutes. Working time is 3-4 minutes following activation. Flex Bond
is also effective for sealing steel pipe joints and for laminating plastics
to core materials.
It has a tensile elongation of 16% and fills gaps as wide as 25 mils.
When bonded surfaces of the same material are separated by a gap of
10 mils, adhesive tensile shear (in pounds per square inch, based on
ASTM D 1002) is typically 878 on ABS, 988 on FRP, 838 on PVC, and 1482
on cold-rolled steel.
Flex Bond pipe sealant is not approved for potable water applications.
