Second High-Performance
PC Plastics Resins Plant for LG-Dow
The Dow Chemical Company, a world-leading supplier of innovative plastics
solutions, to construct second LG Dow Polycarbonate plant in South Korea.
LG Dow Polycarbonate is close to starting construction work on its second
polycarbonate (PC) train in South Korea, the company announced recently.
The company did not say when work would start on the 65,000 tonne/year
line in Yeochun, although sources said it could begin by end-2005.
"Basic engineering work for the second PC train is already completed,
paving the way for us to start construction," said Mark Remmert, president
of LG-Dow, a 50/50 joint venture between US major Dow Chemical and LG
Chem, South Korea's largest petrochemical company.
The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) is the leading chemical and plastics manufacturer
with 73 manufacturing sites in 25 countries. As a pioneer and leader in
the plastics industry, Dow offers a combination of strengths that effectively
give customers the opportunity to potentially lower total costs. Those
strengths include global reach, operational expertise, fabrication knowledge,
and market understanding. Find

The Yeochun project could come onstream less than two years after the
start of construction as the infrastructure was already in place, the
company said. Its first line started up in July 2001.
LG-Dow has appointed a team to develop a timeline for the project and
take charge of cost estimations, contractor selection, construction management,
and the start-up.
The new line would double the company's PC capacity to 130,000 tonne/year.
It would supply PC to South Korea and other Asian markets, said the company.
PCs are high-performance plastics resins used in the manufacture of products
such as compact discs, mobile phones, computer monitor housings, water
bottles, vehicle headlamps, and construction materials. More

LG DOW Polycarbonate Ltd. is a joint venture between LG corporation (former
LG Chemical), the leading Chemical Company in Asia and The Dow Chemical
Company, the largest Chemical Company in the world. LG-DOW was formed

the successful start-up of the LG-DOW polycarbonate plant in Yeosu, Korea,
and the transfer of Dow's polycarbonate market franchise in Asia Pacific.
The plant in Yeosu, Korea will take a scheduled maintenance turnaround,
for approximately two weeks during late October to early November 2005,
in conjunction with a planned shutdown at neighboring Hanwha Petrochemical,
the chlorine supplier to LG Dow.
In Asia, LG-DOW is uniquely capable of delivering proven polycarbonate
technology, the benefits associated with the worldwide CALIBRE* Polycarbonate
brand, and the local logistics flexibility to meet the just-in-time demands
of a diverse customer base.

LG-DOW is optimistic about the future of polycarbonate, with its exceptional
performance and excellent value. Growth in Asia Pacific should outpace
other regions. Therefore, LG-DOW has already built the infrastructure
for a second polycarbonate plant at Yeosu and will continue to invest
in capacity expansion to meet the needs of our customers.
