DSM Dyneema, the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema*, the world’s strongest fiber, will showcase the benefits of this innovative and ultra-reliable polyethylene fiber in net applications for the aquaculture sector at Aqua Sur, stand B9.

AQUA SUR 2006 will be held in Puerto Montt city, Chile, from March 22-25, at the nautic sports center Club Deportes Náuticos Reloncaví. Producers and suppliers of the aquaculture industry will meet at the most important show in the Southern Hemisphere at the IV version of the international aquaculture exhibition AQUA SUR.

Dyneema is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North Carolina (USA). DSM Dyneema is also a partner in a joint venture with Toyobo, which produces Dyneema* in Osaka (Japan). Successful applications include mooring and towing lines, offshore positioning ropes, yachting lines, commercial fishing ropes.

Dyneema is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel.

Dyneema fibers are extremely tough and can resist predatory attacks and biting from both the outside of a net such as the ones from seals and sea wolfs, as well as biting and abrasion from the inside caused by fish such as cod.

At the same time, Dyneema fibers not only feature outstanding resistance against wear and tear, as well as UV light, but they are also much lighter than traditional materials - one third the weight of Polyamide but with equal strength. Therefore, Dyneema provides less tension on the mooring systems, better net shape stability and improved water flow through the cages.

As a result, nets and cages made with Dyneema yarn deliver significant economic and handling benefits saving maintenance time and cost and provide a less stressful and healthier environment for fish.

This attractive solution is not only intended for existing applications but also future netting developments, larger cages as well as farming in exposed or off shore locations.

DSM recently announced that its Dyneema Purity operations have been certified under the international ISO 13485:2003 standard. Dyneema Purity, an ultra-high-molecularweight polyethylene fiber. Also, Dyneema Purity offers exceptional strength combined with the softness of silk, plus a high level of resistance to abrasion and flex fatigue. This combination of properties makes the fiber an excellent candidate for use in high-performance medical textiles. Applications for the fiber include orthopaedic sutures which are used in arthroscopic and open repairs of ligaments and tendons.
