Predator Nets Featuring Super-Strong Fibers

An Italian company Badinotti, manufacturer of aquaculture nets for commercial fishing, introduces a new predator net for protection of farmed fish made with fibers from DSM.

As a leader in producing netting, Badinotti was the first in 1996 to introduce netting made with Dyneema fibers. This high-density polyethylene fiber is the most resistant in the world and is characterized by remarkable low weight and volume. Badinotti to date is among a very few companies who manage to produce raschel knit netting with Dyneema* fibers from DSM.

The new Badinotti predator nets are double needle bar construction produced using knotless Raschel looms. With this technology, knot slippage is avoided and net shape remains unvaried. They are designed for aquaculture including farmed salmon, tuna and cod and range in weight from 350 kg to more than 2,000 kg.

“DSM Dyneema is a real partner to our business. We began using the Dyneema* fiber about ten years ago and our customers have been very happy with its performance,” said Carlo Badinotti, Commercial Director Badinotti S.p.A. “Now we have turned again to the most resistant fiber in the world to protect farmed fish from predators that bite or tear ordinary nets. For our customers, Dyneema* fiber will help prevent monetary losses. For our company, it provides a competitive advantage.”

Compared to netting made of nylon and polyester, Badinotti’s new predator nets provide superior strength for resistance to external attacks, as well as biting and abrasion from farmed fish. Only one-third the weight of polyamide yarns, Dyneema* reduces tension on mooring systems, improves stability of the net configuration, and helps increase water flow.

The combination of nylon together with polyester, used in the production of netting, yields greater resistance to ultra-violet rays and abrasion. It also offers low water absorption, which makes the product lighter and more manageable during maintenance and washing.

DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema*, the world’s strongest fiber. Dyneema is a superstrong polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight per weight basis. Dyneema floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel. Dyneema is produced in Heerlen (The Netherlands) and in Greenville, North Carolina (U.S.A.). DSM Dyneema also works in a HPPE fiber manufacturing joint venture with Toyobo (Japan).

* Dyneema is a registered trademark of Royal DSM N.V.

DSM, headquartered in the Netherlands, with locations in Europe, Asia and the Americas, provides products that are used in a wide range of end markets and applications such as human and animal nutrition and health, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, automotive and transport, coatings, housing and electrical & electronics.

The Badinotti company, (Badinotti S.p.A., Viale Ortles 5, 20139) Milan, Italy, manufacturing nets since 1910, employs the most modern machinery and offers a huge range of both knotted and knotless netting in nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and polyethylene for aquaculture, fishing, safety and sport.
