The next step in packaging machine modularity

New automation system distributes power, servo drive electronics and networking out to plug-and-play machine modules, bringing packaging lines to a new level of flexibility.

ELAU’s new PacDrive* iSH Series Intelligent Servo Modules are part of a modular automation architecture that distributes power, servo drive electronics and networking from the electrical cabinet out to the packaging machine frame.

As a result, each functional section of a machine can become a plug-and-play equipment module with its own distribution hub, single quick-connect cables between hubs and between servo modules, and self-contained servo modules that integrate drive, motor and feedback, all IP65 rated.

The new modular PacDrive system is completely compatible with current and past PacDrive automation controllers, and readily substitutes for conventional PacDrive SH Series motors and PacDrive MC-4 servo drives.

This breakthrough in modularity brings new clarity to mechatronic design and fabrication, aligning the mechanical, software and electrical elements of each function of the machine with its corresponding module. The result is a machine design that is more transparent to designers, operators and troubleshooters. Moving forward, it allows customized machines to be manufactured from interchangeable building blocks that simply plug and play in a way that blurs the distinction between changeover and complete line reconfiguration.

This modularity provides packagers with the flexibility to quickly reconfigure packaging lines for short term production requirements, such as product launches, limited time offers (LTOs) and seasonal promotions. The control software for each module in the line is maintained in the centralized controller, with a single quick interconnect cable linking each module.

Control cabinet space and wiring connections are reduced because only the controller and shared power supplies for up to 16 servo modules each are enclosed, with a single quick-connect cable linking each power supply with its machine-mounted servo modules in line and/or tree topologies. Servo cable lengths can therefore be reduced up to 70%, with separate motion and device network cables eliminated. Overall, per-axis component cost is at least 15% lower than conventional cabinet-mounted drives. Reports of 80% reductions in wiring labor have been reported.

The PacDrive iSH Series servo modules themselves are available in 70 and 100 mm frame sizes, with three stack lengths each, covering the most popular applications requirements of packaging machinery. Safety and I/O option modules integrate additional control capabilities onto the servo modules and over the quick-connect cables, further reducing cabinet space and wiring requirements.
