Innovator for packaging automation technology honored

Respected, international market research company credits ELAU AG with leading the way in packaging machine automation.

ELAU AG was and is the innovator for motion logic control, integrated servo modules and the integration of robots in packaging machines.

ELAU AG has been one of the first companies successful in making an impact on the packaging industry with the technology in designing and delivering integrated drives and motors in modular form.

Recently, Frost & Sullivan awarded ELAU, Marktheidenfeld, Germany for Innovation & Advancement in Industry for 2007. The respected, international market research company credited ELAU AG with leading the way in packaging machine automation. Whether motion/logic control, integrated servo modules or the integration of robots in packaging machines, ELAU was and is the innovator.

The award presentation was preceded by a study conducted by Frost & Sullivan that highlighted the West European market for motion control systems. The market research company found that packaging machine engineering was the most demanding field of application in this highly competitive market segment. In determining the most significant challenges that the suppliers of motion control and controller systems have to meet, Frost & Sullivan recognized the following.

Elau was and is the trendsetter for motion control systems and automation technology in the packaging machine industry. Frost & Sullivan analyst Suman Bhaskar says: "The ability of ELAU AG to identify industrial trends and customer requirements and to successfully implement industrial solutions is a considerable and unique selling point in the highly competitive packaging industry". The presentation of the award for innovation and advancement to ELAU AG was well justified.

ELAU was the first to recognize the industry-specific requirements after specializing in automation solutions for packaging machines and the first able to implement these solutions with customized motion/logic control technology. That use of open technology based on international standards was noted in particular.

ELAU takes on another pioneering role in the development of embedded robotics. By integrating the controller functionality for robots in a motion/logic control system, “black box” robot control technology is no longer required. This innovation allowed robots that had previously been used only in end of line applications to be implemented in the primary and secondary packaging areas.

Integrated servo drives are also an innovation initiative by ELAU. According to Frost & Sullivan, many automation specialists had attempted this approach and were more or less unsuccessful. Only ELAU was capable of implementing the ideas successfully into products with practical user benefits. The PacDrive iSH series has defined modularity on a new level in the opinion of the market research company.

Another factor for success, according to Frost & Sullivan, is the combination of technological advance and the right marketing strategy: Instead of a component business, ELAU makes a solution-oriented system its primary focus. Mechanical engineers as well as end users receive all necessary engineering support and training to generate the maximum benefits from PacDrive technology.

ELAU has established a direct presence in all countries that manufacture packaging machinery. Every ELAU location acts as a complete solution provider for the respective local market. Tight interaction throughout this sales network ensures comprehensive global support for OEMs and end users in the consumer goods industries.

ELAU AG makes sure that its customers are trained in handling, maintenance and servicing. The company gives training to both the machine builders and the end users. This is one of the strategies that ELAU has practiced throughout. The aim is to help the machine builders program and integrate the solution into the machine themselves. By empowering its customers to handle the implementations by themselves, ELAU not only broadens the advantages its customers get from using its controllers, but also helps build a confident, lasting relationship for the future.

Training its customers on handling, maintenance and service of its components reduces manpower costs, reduces machine down time and therefore increases profitability in a very competitive market. This training is of the complete package that ELAU delivers to its customers.

The award for Industry and Advancement 2007 was confirmation from a competent third party: ELAU AG is the first to address the automation of packaging machines globally. Opting for ELAU means opting for leading technology and comprehensive, competent solutions.
