ELAU automation systems for packaging machines market grows

One of the pioneers in the machine automation technology industry for the packaging sector ELAU AG is optimistic for 2006 due to increased incoming orders.

In 2005 ELAU AG increased its revenues by 20.3 per cent. This means that the company grew over six times faster than the food and packaging machine division of VDMA (the German trade association), which is expecting an increase of 3%. After the successful financial year that it has just completed, ELAU is also optimistic for 2006 because incoming orders increased by 22.4% in 2005, which also leads to the expectation of growth rates of over 20% for the current financial year. The excellent start to 2006 certainly indicates this.

“In the last year we expanded our market share in all major countries for packaging machine construction and are planning to more than double our sales by 2010. With annual growth rates of over 20 per cent we are precisely on course,” emphasized ELAU CEO Dr. Thomas Cord, who took this position over from ELAU founder Erwin Fertig last September. “It is clear that we will have to continue to make massive investments in our Sales and Support. We will set up service hubs in Asia and Latin America in cooperation with Schneider Electric, but also greatly expand our activities in Europe and North America,” Cord continued. ELAU is expecting further growth mainly from export because even now foreign business makes a major contribution to profits. For example, the subsidiary ELAU Systems Italia S.r.l. surpassed previous year sales by over 40%.

With almost 30 years experience in automation technology, ELAU AG is one of the pioneers in the industry. Since 1994 the company has concentrated solely on machine automation in the consumer packaged goods industry: in addition to packaging machines, the company’s focus is on production machines and robotics. Since then, ELAU has been the automation expert in the industry with the highest growth rates and now has over 300 employees. ELAU’s success is also illustrated by the 30,000 PacDrive* equipped machines now in use throughout the world with PacDrive, with another 5,000 being added every year.

ELAU will continue to implement its corporate strategy of 100% concentration on the packaging market under the umbrella of Schneider Electric. With its own sales organization, ELAU offers packaging machinery manufacturers and users critical enabling technology to increase their operational efficiencies and flexibility under the ELAU PacDrive* brand. The packaging market is also an important target market of Schneider Electric, and ELAU enjoys the full support of the parent company.

By focusing on the packaging industry, ELAU can offer its customers unique products that are purpose built for the needs of this market. Examples include a servo drive with integrated electronics for the beverage industry, as well as recently introduced robotics functionality that enables manufacturers of secondary packaging machines to greatly increase their flexibility. “To maintain our competitive edge and market opportunities, we spent almost 20 per cent of gross earnings on research and development last year. Every day, our engineers and software specialists are busy developing new solutions for the automation of packaging machines. Through continuing advances in PacDrive technology we can offer our customers a sustainable competitive edge,” Dr. Cord explained.
Since 2005 ELAU AG has been a company of the Schneider Electric Group, which earns turnover of € 11.7 billion with over 92,000 employees and a service network in 130 countries throughout the world. ELAU therefore has a strong parent company that not only consistently encourages worldwide support and service, but – above all – the shared goal of market leadership in the automation of packaging machines.

PacDrive* is a registered trademark of ELAU AG.
