HAMBURG, Germany -- Following are capsule descriptions of Intelligent Fastening applications from Textron Fastening Systems that could fundamentally change design, assembly and maintenance operations in aircraft interiors and avionics instrumentation.

Interiors

Aircraft interiors are custom designed to fit the geometry of a particular airframe. Internal lining, passenger support units, overhead bins and lockers, and carpets and seats vary by the make and model of the particular aircraft. Larger aircraft interiors are modular and support a wide range of electronic installations such as lights and entertainment systems. Aircraft designers work within the constraints of a curved form, and for aesthetic and security reasons conceal fastening systems. This means sequential assembly of panels and fixtures, and time-consuming and ergonomically difficult installation and service processes.

Intelligent fastening could change all this, allowing total reconfiguration of an aircraft interior from a passenger plane to a freight hauler in a few hours. An array of multipoint intelligent fasteners, positioned logically and hardwired with embedded microprocessors, could be locked or unlocked by remote commands. This would allow quick removal and installation of seats, panels, and trim, along with modular components. Intelligent fasteners also could document each process and verify correct fits.

Controlled Access Panels

Access panels allow regular inspection and maintenance of such critical components as cable ways, hydraulic points, and electrical junctions. These panels are screwed into place behind the interior lining, and removing and replacing them can damage surrounding surfaces and wear out the fasteners.

Remotely activated fasteners would eliminate the need for conventional tools, minimizing damage and speeding up maintenance procedures. Fasteners would have secure addresses that respond only to encrypted signals, ensuring accessibility only by authorized technicians. A central database would store information on fastener status and maintenance history, including dates, times, places, and the technicians performing each process.
