Instrument Panels
Instrument panels are designed with particular attention to cockpit
crew comfort and ergonomics, and are laid out for best viewing angles
and efficient use of space. Most instruments are secured from the
front, and removing them for service and calibration is difficult
and time consuming. Often, this requires disassembly of the entire
panel to gain access to a single instrument.
Intelligent fastening would simplify and expedite installation and
service procedures. Using a remote tool such as a PDA or a laptop
PC, technicians could manage and control assembly, disassembly and
repair activities.
Technicians would log onto the system, obtain authorization, and be
directed through a list of procedures to remove or replace an instrument.
The system would document all activities and provide up-to-date service
records.
Fasteners could be integrated directly into the back of the instrument
panel and be hosted by existing electronic systems. Designers would
have new freedom to optimize the size of instrument panels, make optimum
use of cockpit space, and enhance ergonomics.
Continuous Monitoring
An array of intelligent fasteners with embedded sensors could provide
real-time data on temperature, humidity, the presence of volatile
chemicals, vibration, and other conditions that affect aircraft safety
and maintenance programs. The fastener network would instantly detect
and report aberrations in aircraft environment, raising alarms when
necessary.
