Silicones Additives from GE Help Make Scents

New GE Formasil additives made from GE silicones make good scents for candle manufacturers.

Scented candles are purchased for their appealing fragrance, but achieving satisfactory dispersion of vanilla, citrus, and other fragrances throughout the candle has been a big challenge – until now. New patent-pending Formasil* silicone additives from GE Advanced Materials, Silicones are highly effective in evenly dispersing fragrances in candle wax, particularly paraffin wax. Formasil additives help enable higher loadings, and also help reduce unsightly mottling, hazing, and “weeping” that are a result of poor solubility of the fragrance additive in the wax. Compared with traditional approaches of dispersing fragrances, GE’s Formasil additives provide a double benefit to candle manufacturers – a more intense fragrance and improved candle appearance; benefits that translate into greater consumer appeal.

“We applied GE innovation to solve a chronic problem for customers that manufacture scented candles, and the results should help them gain a market advantage,” said Bob Ruckle, global marketing manager for the Silicones additives offering at GE. “GE’s technology will allow manufacturers to add more vanilla and citrus fragrance, while significantly improving the aesthetic appeal of the candles. We believe scented candles made with Formasil dispersants will win consumers over with just one sniff.”

Through proprietary technology, GE’s Formasil line of organofunctional silicone products improves or eliminates the inherent insolubility of vanilla and citrus fragrances in candle wax. With greater compatibility, more fragrance can be loaded into paraffin. Further, the Formasil silicone additives help stabilize the fragrance dispersion, offsetting or preventing the fragrance additive from causing unattractive mottling, cloudiness, and weeping over the life of the candle. Lastly, improved dispersion promotes consistent release of fragrance throughout the candle’s life.

GE’s Formasil 500 silicone dispersant is specifically engineered for vanilla, a scent that has proved especially challenging for candle-makers due to its insolubility. Formasil 500 dispersant provides optimal dispersion and higher loadings of up to 15 percent more vanilla scent in paraffin wax. Formasil 520 silicone is designed for citrus scents such as lemon, lime, and orange, with higher loadings of up to 10 percent more citrus scent.

GE’s Silicones offer will soon include additional Formasil products to target other popular fragrances; the scent currently in development is “berry.” For more information, please call 1.800.295.2392 or +607.786.8131.
