Huntsman Corporation recently introduced a new fast curing polyetheramine, JEFFAMINE® XTJ-590 amine. XTJ-590 provides a cure speed that is approximately four times faster than Huntsman’s popular JEFFAMINE® D-230 product. It can be used alone or blended with standard polyetheramines for epoxy curing, polyamide preparation or applications requiring high purity reactive diamines.

“With XTJ-590, we are addressing a technical need in the epoxy curatives market by providing a curative with fast cure, flexibility, and low color,” says Alan Pekarik, Performance Specialties Market Manager for North America. “XTJ-590 is a relatively low molecular weight, reactive polyether diamine. As an epoxy curing agent it provides moderately rapid cures, and epoxy systems with good mechanical properties, excellent impact and thermal shock resistance.”

Huntsman is a global manufacturer and marketer of commodity and differentiated chemicals. Its operating companies manufacture basic products for a variety of global industries including chemicals, plastics, automotive, aviation, footwear, paints and coatings, construction, technology, agriculture, health care, textiles, detergent, personal care, furniture, appliances and packaging. Originally known for pioneering innovations in packaging, and later, rapid and integrated growth in petrochemicals, Huntsman today has revenues of $11.5 billion, 11,300 employees and 62 operations in 22 countries.

JEFFAMINE® amines and other polyether compounds

The JEFFAMINE® polyoxyalkyleneamines are a part of an ever-expanding family of polyether compound products. They contain primary amino groups attached to the terminus of a polyether backbone. They are thus "polyether amines." The polyether backbone is based either on propylene oxide (PO), ethylene oxide (EO), or mixed EO/PO. (Newer products may contain other backbone segments as well.)

The JEFFAMINE® product family consists of monoamines, diamines, and triamines, which are available in a variety of molecular weights, ranging up to 5,000.

The wide range of molecular weights, amine functionality, and oxide type and distribution provides flexibility in synthetic design of compounds made from JEFFAMINE® products. For the most part, JEFFAMINE® products undergo typical amine reactions and are low viscosity liquids, exhibiting low vapor pressure.
