Improving the Operation of Metalstamping Presses

Small Orders of Tool Steel FAST! from Online Metals

August 03, 2004 -- CARY and CHICAGO, Illinois (USA) -- Jobwerx News -- New energy-efficient technology to improve metal stamping press efficiency through shock control and force management.

Improving press efficiency through shock control and force management. These methods reduce press shock, improve part quality, allow faster press operation and press performance results in higher profitability.

The new system is an energy-efficient technology developed to improve the operation of metal stamping presses, particularly those used to form lighter-weight metals, such as high-strength steel and aluminum. The technology provides a soft hit, user-controlled tonnage at all points in the stroke, hold on bottom, and a controlled binder ring return. This new technology will accelerate use of lighterweight metals in auto/truck manufacturing and help to reduce energy consumption.

The Force Modulator System™, (alternative to nitrogen cylinders) is built around a series of interconnected hydraulic cylinders. As the press cycles, the piston is driven down into the cylinder, in turn ejecting hydraulic fluid from the cylinder. As the press upstrokes, the fluid is re-pressurized and released back into each cylinder, forcing the piston to rise into a fully extended position. It is a standard hydraulic loop.

In a production application at Ford Motor, very high impact and return shocks were all but eliminated, pressure during part formation was all but equalized at each point in the stroke, and measured part quality improved approximately 80% with use of the Force Modulator.

Developed by Smedberg Machine Corp., Chicago, Illinois, the system is marketed by Metalforming Controls Corp., of Cary, Illinois. Smedberg Machine Corporation has also exploded onto the scene with the recent completion of a custom engineered design of a die transfer cart that can handle an excess load of 100,000 lbs. Filling the void left by the collapse of large press manufacturing companies.
