Chemicals Group LANXESS Invisible Light Source Security System

Invisible weather-resistant luminescent liquid developed by LANXESS Textile Processing Chemicals Business Unit protects against terrorism.

The chemicals group LANXESS provides the basis for a new type of security system that can put property protection and plant safety on a completely new footing. “Through the use of our new substance it is possible for the first time to effectively monitor facilities that stretch over an expansive area such as railroad tracks, pipelines or airports,” said LANXESS CEO Dr. Axel C. Heitmann.

Monitoring the protected area is accomplished with the aid of specially developed, fully automatic, image processing software - day or night. A laser camera, attached to the main corpus of a helicopter, films the area marked with the luminescent liquid. A computer then generates and compares real-time images with recorded pictures taken directly after spraying and can even identify changes as small as a postcard.

Invisible light source brings greater security

The new system was recently presented to military and security experts from Germany and abroad on a testing ground on the Lüneburg heath (Unterlüß in the Südheide nature park) belonging to Rheinmetall AG. The key to the new surveillance system is a weather-resistant liquid developed by LANXESS’s Textile Processing Chemicals Business Unit. This can be sprayed on the terrain to be protected, by helicopter for example, and is invisible to the human eye. However, when seen under a laser, the sprayed areas are luminescent. A computer compares real-time images of the area taken with a laser camera with pictures recorded immediately after spraying. Even from a height of some 100 meters it is possible to identify changes in territory or to property the size of a postcard, day and night.

With this new system LANXESS is responding to the increasing threat posed to facilities that are otherwise difficult to protect. The novel concept could bring a whole new dimension to efforts to counter the threat of attacks during events such as next year’s Soccer World Cup. Even larger areas of terrain can rapidly be secured in an uncomplicated and, above all, cost-effective manner with this spraying process. In the event that a disturbance is registered during a monitoring flight, this can then be investigated in a targeted way by trained personnel. Expensive and error-prone inspections are therefore a thing of the past. Railroad construction work or animal tracks are automatically classified as unproblematic by the software.

Proven readiness and environmental compatibility

The presentation of this new type of surveillance system, a weather-resistant chemical, has already proven its technical readiness and environmental compatibility in several tests and large-scale experiments. The results show that the new system can significantly improve the security not only of railroad and pipeline routes, but also of power stations and airports.
