Lanxess Chemicals Group Opens Chloroprene Rubber Center

The technical rubber business unit of Lanxess chemicals group opened a new process control center for polychloroprene production.

In the production of chloroprene rubber (CR) LANXESS is continuing to focus on quality, modernization and capacity expansion. The chemicals group opened a new central control building for CR in Dormagen on December 13, 2005. The parallel implementation of a state-of-the-art process control system will further advance product quality and allows the combination of different process areas. The new control building should help to strengthen and expand LANXESS’s top global position in polychloroprene production.

"By 2008 we aim to reduce fixed costs significantly and, at the same time, increase production volumes. With this new control building we shall be in an even better position to meet the needs of our customers effectively," says Ingo Fischer, Head of Global Product Management for CR at LANXESS’s Technical Rubber Products Business Unit. Dormagen houses the world’s largest CR unit with a direct link between chloroprene monomer and polychloroprene.

Polychloroprene is used in a large number of applications in the field of technical rubber goods e.g. in hose, cables, conveyor belts, in the automotive sector in axle boots, windshield wiper blades and belts, and in diving and surfing suits. It is also used in adhesive raw materials and latex applications.

Dormagen is the place of work for around 1,100 LANXESS employees. They manufacture starting products and active ingredients for crop protection products, rubber, coating raw materials, plastics, organic intermediates and inorganic chemicals. Products from Dormagen are found, for example, in vehicles and toys, medical appliances and electronics. The beginnings of chemical production in Dormagen can be traced back to 1913. An official foundation charter is dated August 25, 1917.

The Technical Rubber Business Unit belongs to the Performance Rubber segment, which achieved total sales in 2004 of EUR 1.431 billion.
