2007-02-12 News Release
Electronic chemicals from Saltigo at Informex Saltigo, focusing mainly on custom synthesis, to feature industrial chemicals tailored to the needs of the electronics industry at the Informex show.
The electronics industry is an innovative, dynamically growing sector
with a lively demand for specific, sometimes complex structured chemicals.
Saltigo, the global specialist for custom synthesis, has amassed considerable
experience in the fields of chemistry and process development over many
decades and also has a wide-ranging, state-of-the-art technology portfolio.
This expertise, specially tailored to the needs of the electronics industry,
can provide customers in this industry with significant market and competitive
advantages.
"Here, we can contribute our expertise in the production of complex
molecules, also on a large scale. We have collected this expertise in
the production of pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates and active
ingredients over many years," explains Dr. Lars Rodefeld, head of
Process Development at Saltigo Specialty Chemicals. A typical example
involves the substances needed for the production of organic light emitting
diodes (OLEDs). They include, in addition to porphyrins and coumarins,
a number of aromatic amines that are used, for example, for hole injection
and hole transportation. Catalyzed coupling reactions are ideal for synthesizing
such molecules with a high yield and high purity. The Buchwald-Hartwig
amination, for example, which was developed to industrial maturity by
a team of Saltigo experts with the inventor Dr. Stephen L. Buchwald from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a partner company,
has provided an outstanding way to access arylated benzidines –
for example TPB (N,N,N’,N’-tetraphenylbenzidine) and ? and
? NPBs (N,N’-Bis(naphthaline-1- or -2-yl)-N,N’-bis(phenyl)-benzidine.
In this connection, Saltigo has both the necessary licenses and the relevant
experience to successfully use such reactions for large-scale production
on behalf of the customers. Palladium-catalyzed aromatic aminations have,
for instance, since been performed at Saltigo in quantities of over a
ton. "For Saltigo, the market for electronic chemicals is highly attractive for various reasons. We focus mainly on custom synthesis, although the production of multi-customer products is also a highly interesting business," explains Andreas Depta, talking about the strategy of the Specialty Chemicals Business Line. Saltigo regards its main task as supplying customers with electronic chemicals on a commercial scale, but is also pleased to enter into long-term cooperation agreements involving the necessary process development and graduated production. Another main activity for Saltigo in addition to the supply of chemicals
for the LCD and OLED markets is that of conductive and semi-conductive
organic polymers such as polythiophenes. Here, the rapid advance of RFID
technology (Radio
