Comprehensive leather chemicals for retanning and finishing processes LANXESS to exhibit innovations for the retanning and finishing processes in the leather chemicals market at FIMEC 2007 in Brazil.
LANXESS chemicals group, which has one of the most comprehensive ranges
of leather chemicals, will be exhibiting recent developments
for the retanning and finishing processes at the upcoming FIMEC 2007 in
Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. LANXESS chemicals group will be showcasing its new Retingan ZF, which is the first and only genuine resin tanning agent without free formaldehyde. Retingan ZF does not contaminate the leather with free formaldehyde, but has all the other performance advantages of a genuine resin. Due to their chemical structure and molecular weight, resins bind preferably to the loose part of the skin, an effect known as selective filling. The hides are tightened up and become more uniform, and the cutting yield is increased. Only genuine resin products have this performance feature.
Tanigan PAK-N-A is an anionic neutralizing agent for retanning with very high lightfastness, resistance to heat yellowing and a good buffing effect. The advantage of neutralization with Tanigan PAK-N-A is as follows: The wet blue contains free acids, and during storage the acidity may increase, reducing the pH. These acids must therefore be neutralized before retanning, otherwise costly problems are likely. Simple alkali salts only change the pH and have no effect on the I.E.P. (Iso-Electric Point). The tanners’ dilemma is the fact that raising the pH by neutralization increases the risk of loose leather. Tanigan PAK-N-A modifies the I.E.P., allowing lower pH neutralization and giving tight leather. Tanigan PAK-N-A is also free of formaldehyde. Levotan C-A is a softening, lightfast anionic retanning material. In combination with replacement syntans and vegetable and resin tanning materials it gives soft and tight leather. Levotan C-A has good dispersing action and can be combined with vegetable tanning materials. It is highly suitable for milled leather, e.g. bag leather, shoe nappa and garment leather. Levotan C-A helps to stabilize acrylic polymers and disperses them well, even at low pH values, thus keeping the grain smooth. Use of this product has been shown to considerably reduce the amount of wrinkling on different raw materials, thereby increasing the cutting yield. Blancorol ZB-33 is a zirconium sulfate tanning material with good water solubility. It is suitable for white tannage and also retannage, reducing the elasticity of the leathers and increasing the print retention, which is an important advantage in the case of embossed articles. It is therefore very important to know the latest trends and colors. With this in mind, the Competence Center Italian Innovation established in Sta Croce, Tuscany, will be showing the latest fashion trends and colors for Spring/Summer 2008, entitled Fresh Vibrations & Back to the Future. The Competence Center involves all technicians across the world, enabling them to exchange information on new leather articles quickly. According to Fabio Fonseca, Marketing Manager, BU Leather Brazil, “Global, regional and local LANXESS staff will be present at the event, creating the ideal scenario for an exchange of ideas and a mutual updating of the global marketing and technical situation.” Finishing products: Bayderm Finish GB-A is a water-based top coat for all kinds of leather – especially milled leathers – with an excellent gloss level, natural appearance and smoothness. Opti-Matt A-1000, a completely new, dull, silica-free, acrylic top coat dispersion for furniture and shoe upper leathers based on innovative matting technology, will also be presented during FIMEC by the LANXESS chemicals group. This top coat provides good wet rubfastness, good flex resistance and a very pleasant and soft feel. Finishes made with this product do not tend to repolish. The product can be used as a sole binder or in combination with a gloss component – Opti-Clear A-1100 – to achieve gloss levels from semi-dull to glossy. Further highlights will include the well-known Levaderm range of liquid
dyestuffs with excellent fastness properties, in particular fastness to
water spotting, lightfastness and migration resistance, and the high-performance
X-Grade system with outstanding filling properties consisting of Euderm
X-Grade CGS (Corrected Grain System) and Euderm X-Grade FGS (Full Grain
System). Unlike conventional upgrading systems, the new X-Grade system
has the ability to fill grain side defects without losing its volume during
drying. Euderm X-Grade CGS is designed to upgrade corrected grain and
split leathers, while Euderm X-Grade FGS is designed for full grain leathers
and is especially suitable for application by roll coater with an appropriate
cylinder. Due to the excellent coverage and filling effect, a natural,
high-quality appearance is achieved.
