Futuristic design with LANXESS rubber material

The Technical Rubber Products business unit of LANXESS seals joints for the futuristic looking roof structure at Shenyang Olympic Stadium.

Olympic-standard performances have already been achieved in the construction of Shenyang Olympic Stadium: The futuristic looking roof structure measuring a total of 2,000 sq.m comprises a large number of polycarbonate sheets, whose transparency allows the turf enough light to grow properly. To seal the joints, profiles made of Buna EP T 9650 from Leverkusen-based LANXESS’s Technical Rubber Products business unit were used. This rubber is ideal for this task as it is particularly resistant to weathering effects such as UV radiation and ozone, which was one of the main reasons why the designers and architects involved chose it. Another Buna rubber grade from LANXESS, EP T 6470, had already been used in a similar application in the Tianjin Olympic Stadium.

Shenyang will be one of the five soccer venues for the 2008 Olympic Games in China. Situated in the North-Eastern province of Liaoning, the 60,000-seater arena is at the center of a sports complex that also includes a sports hall for 10,000 spectators, a swimming center and tennis courts.

The Technical Rubber Products business unit is part of the Performance Rubber segment, which recorded sales of EUR 1,776 million in fiscal 2006.
