After fire plastics production is back

The partial production of ABS plastics is back on stream at the Lustran Polymers plant in Tarragona in Spain after a shut down due to a fire recently.

The Lustran Polymers business unit compounding facilities were damaged in a fire on August 18, 2006, and production was temporarily disrupted as a result.

No-one was injured and there was no damage to the environment, nor was there any danger to the local population.

Lustran Polymers, a part of the LANXESS Engineering Plastics segment, is one of the biggest suppliers in the sector. ABS specialties from LANXESS are plastics with high mechanical strength, outstanding processing properties and excellent surface quality. In addition, the company offers a wide range of customized colors and a broad spectrum of products for special applications. Lustran* ABS specialties are used in the following areas: electrical engineering, IT, bath/sanitary ware, automotive engineering and toys as well as medical technology. Typical applications include interior and exterior components for cars, housings for all types of equipment, toys and garden furniture.

"The colorful difference". With its wealth of technical expertise and cutting-edge technology, Lustran Polymers will make its debut as a distinctive and independent brand on October 1, 2006.

"One section of the compounding lines is now back in full production," announced Stefan Michel, head of the Europe and Latin America region of the recently renamed LANXESS business unit Lustran Polymers. "I am confident that we can also conclude the repair work on the other compounding lines as planned." Additional external production capacities would be used in the meantime.

The fire has had no effect on the project to expand capacity in Tarragona. The realignment of the business unit is also proceeding completely according to plan.
