Paper industry Metso to rebuild thermomechanical pulp plant

Metso Paper will rebuild the Norske Skog Saugbrugs TMP2 thermomechanical pulp plant in Halden, Norway scheduled to come online in March of 2007.

The rebuild consists of two TMP lines, with the first line scheduled for start-up in March 2007 and the second line in October 2007. The delivery of equipment will start in September 2006. The value of the order is not disclosed.

In addition to the TMP lines, Metso Paper's delivery will include a new primary screening line and auxiliary equipment to separate the reject from the existing TMP lines into separate reject refining systems are also included in the supply.

The Saugbrugs Mill aims to improve the quality, particularly the surface properties, of magazine papers manufactured by PM 6. The current TMP pulping process will be modified so that the pulp properties fulfill the quality requirements of final paper.

Typically the value of this type of large rebuild ranges from EUR 10 to 15 million.

Norske Skog is a world leading producer of newsprint and magazine paper, with 20 wholly and partly owned mills in 14 countries on four continents. The Saugbrugs Mill is now one of the largest production units of SC magazine paper in the world. The three paper machines have a total annual capacity of 550,000 tons.
