INSIGHT: Prestigious advanced training program raises skills
of lean manufacturing professionals for six sigma improvement projects.
The Advanced Manufacturing Specialist Training Program (AMSTP) is expected
to hold classes in St. Louis, Kansas City, Rolla and at yet to be determined
locations in southeast or southwest Missouri.
Participants completing the program will be certified as Advanced Manufacturing
Specialists. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
training and experience in a relevant subject and at least 2 years manufacturing
experience. Graduating engineering students may apply. Applicants must
be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, but current employment is not
a requirement for application.
They will gain important advanced skills, increase their value in the
marketplace as lean manufacturing/enterprise specialists and business
savvy engineers, and be prepared to undertake six sigma improvement
projects. This curriculum includes both classroom and on-the-job training
and will equip workers with a practical, well-rounded knowledge of advanced
manufacturing.
To earn the Certificaiton, a participant must complete the following
three modules in a one year period. This will require 30 classroom days
and 40 in-plant days for completion of appropriate projects.
The three modules are Six Sigma, Business Skills and Lean Enterprise.
There will be a comprehensive test after each module that you will be
required to take and pass before receiving the Certification of Advanced
Manufacturing Specialist.
Neither tuition nor fees will be charged, but companies must agree to
allow participating employees adequate, paid, time away from the job
to attend classroom training and to complete in-plant projects.
The training program is funded by a $2.1 million U.S. Department of
Labor H1-B grant. It is being managed by Missouri Enterprise in cooperation
with the Missouri Association For Advancing Manufacturing (MAAM), the
University of Missouri - Rolla, the University of Missouri System, local
Workforce Investment Boards, Missouri Department of Workforce Development
Career Centers and the Missouri Training and Employment Council.
Veterans who posses a DD214 with equal qualifications and background
will receive preference for admittance into the program.
