Added insulation for energy efficiency when buying a new home

In energy efficient homes, homeowners are generally unknowledgeable when it comes to the amount of insulation in the attic.

By spending one day in the attic, homeowners can improve their energy efficiency, lessen their environmental footprint and increase the salability of their home. A new survey conducted by manufacturer Owens Corning, a world leader in building materials systems and composite solutions, reveals that Americans still have leverage when it comes to selling their homes. According to the survey, 96 percent of homebuyers consider energy efficiency when purchasing a new home and 71 percent are interested in a home that reduces their overall impact on the environment. Adding insulation in the attic helps the home-seller appeal to both of these criteria.

"In an increasingly competitive housing market, differentiation is key for the home-seller," says Kirsten Kemp, host of TLC's "Property Ladder," a television show dedicated to the art of flipping homes. "With the lure of reduced energy costs and environmental footprint, adding insulation to the attic is one of the easiest, most cost effective ways homeowners can make their home more attractive to potential buyers."

What exactly is an insulating system? The answer starts with the role insulation plays in your home. All insulating products are based on a single basic principle: heat moves from warmer to colder areas. On cold days, warm air from inside tries to get out. On warm days, the hot air outside is trying to get in. Insulation slows this process.

Which means the only way to maximize your home's energy efficiency is to insulate all the areas of your home susceptible to air infiltration and heat transfer. The Owens Corning Insulating System consists of many products working together throughout your home to deliver energy savings and year-round comfort.

Despite homebuyers' interest in energy efficient homes, the survey revealed that homeowners are generally unknowledgeable when it comes to the amount of insulation in their attic. For example, 78 percent of homeowners have added no insulation to their attic; in large part because they believe their home already has enough. Conversely, 80 percent of homes built before 1980 are not insulated to proper government standards. In an effort to help educate homebuyers and homeowners, Owens Corning created an energy microsite, which addresses the question of insulation levels and energy efficiency in the home. The site can be accessed under insulation/energysavings at Owens Corning.

"For 68 years, Owens Corning has been a leader in providing innovative, energy efficient solutions for homeowners," says Gale Tedhams, products and programs manager, residential insulation, Owens Corning. "We continue in that leadership tradition by offering cutting-edge products and education that improve our customers' homes and lives."

Whether selling, buying, or simply maintaining a home, the following are additional tips Kirsten Kemp and Owens Corning recommend to help decrease energy operating costs and improve home value:

-- Replacing old windows for improved sound control and energy efficiency
-- Having your heating and cooling systems inspected regularly
-- In particularly hot or cold climates, caulking and weather-stripping
windows and doors for an inexpensive "quick-fix" to drafty entranceways
