Plastic Retainer Device Curbs your Appetite while Promoting Weight Loss
Manufacturing News Center
Seattle, WA--May 27, 2004--A New Behavior Modification Tool to Reduce
Food Intake
Medical device-maker Scientific Intake of Atlanta, has designed a retainer-like
device that it says promotes weight loss by forcing people to take smaller
bites.
The DDS System is created using a mold of the mouth, which is made by
a dentist and shipped to the company, which produces the custom-fitted
plastic device. The manufacturers chief executive says the smaller bites
help the wearer to eat slowly, giving the brain more time to recognize
when the stomach is full and making wearers feel satisfied on less food
and says he lost 14 pounds simply by wearing it off and on over five
months. Fast eaters can do a lot of caloric damage before putting down
the fork.
Critics have dismissed the gadget as a temporary solution, arguing that
a baby spoon could accomplish the same thing; however, at a recent meeting
of diabetes and obesity experts, the company touted results of a study
finding that 24 overweight individuals who wore the device intermittently
for a month lost an average of almost six pounds. The device” which
hit the market May 17th” sells for around $400 +.
