Polymers leader plastics sales activities up

Quadrant polymers materials reports record sales up 36 percent with the high performance plastics operations contributing to the major increase.

Quadrant posted net sales of 804.3 million Swiss francs in the 2006 financial year (vs. 591.7 million Swiss francs in 2005), thus exceeding the previous year's figure by 36%. The high-performance plastics activities recorded sales of 646.3 million (vs. 453.5 million) Swiss francs, corresponding to a rise of 43%. Net sales by the plastic composites / cable protection conduits operations totalled 158.0 million (vs. 138.2 million) Swiss francs, thus achieving growth of 14% compared with the previous year.

Some 5 percentage points of the striking increase in sales to more than 800 million Swiss francs was attributable to organic growth and 30 percentage points on a currency-adjusted basis to the first-time consolidation for a full year of the Poly Hi Solidur Group (PHS) and Japan GMT Co. Ltd (JGC), which were acquired in the 2005 financial year, and the 2006 acquisition of Advanced Engineering Plastic Products, the company's former distribution partner in Korea.

The High-Performance Plastics Division (accounting for some 80% of total sales) benefited both from its global market leadership in engineering plastic products, further reinforced by the integration of PHS, which has now been completed, and also from the global economic situation, which remained encouraging. On the other hand, the smaller Plastic Composites / Cable Protection Conduits Division (accounting for some 20% of total sales) suffered from weak demand from the automotive sector and the resulting competitive pressure, and thus did not fulfil expectations overall, although the cable protection systems business benefited from very healthy demand.

Quadrant will report in detail on its results for the 2006 financial year on March 30, 2007.
