February 27, 2005 - Jobwerx News - For Rexam, one of the world's top five consumer packaging groups and the world’s leading beverage can maker, it was another challenging year.

Its global operations focus on beverage packaging in metal, glass and plastic, as well as plastic packaging solutions for the beauty, pharmaceutical, and food industries around the world.

Rexam is a member of the FTSE 100. Its ordinary shares are listed with the UK Listing Authority and trade on the market for listed securities on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol REX.

Despite there being no resolution to the deposit system on one-way packaging in Germany and despite the continued weakness of the US dollar, which impacted results particularly from the Americas on translation into sterling, overall financial performance was successful.

The results for 2004 were sales from ongoing operations advanced 4% to £3.1bn and our underlying profit before tax rose 26% to £300m. Free cash flow generation was again particularly strong at £226m.

Global Development Strategy

Presence in the Southern Hemisphere: The highly successful integration of the Latasa beverage can plants in Brazil, which was acquired in November 2003, has reaped even greater benefits than was first hoped for.

In Europe: With the acquisition of two glassworks, one in the Netherlands and one in Poland, Rexam strengthened its position in consolidating the northern European glass container market.

Attractive growth sectors in consumer packaging included, the acquisition of Risdon Pharma in 2003, and Plastic Omnium Medical in France, a supplier of drug delivery and dispensing systems. Thereby establishing a leading position in the fast growing pharmaceutical packaging market.

Nearly 15% of sales are now in emerging markets, including countries such as Brazil, Russia and China. During 2004, Rexam strengthened its presence in these markets, acquiring full ownership and control of our beverage can plants in Mexico and China. And there has been a recent agreement to provide technical support to a beverage can plant start-up in India.

The European beverage can market continues to expand, despite the difficulties in Germany, and grew some 5% in 2004. The market is expected to grow at a similar level this year. The traditional beverage can market in the US is currently flat but ther are numerous opportunities for Rexam to expand through the introduction of faster growth products, such as non-standard can sizes.



* Available exclusively through Rexam Beverage Can North America, the new JOLT Battery Bottle is made possible by combining Rexam’s 23.5oz Monster™ can body with Cap Can™ closure technology. The 23.5oz aluminum can body is produced and printed on one of Rexam’s high-speed can manufacturing lines and then transformed into a re-sealable container by seaming on a Cap Can end and closure developed by Dayton Systems Group, Inc. (DSG). DSG, located in Miamisburg, OH, developed this patented concept, including the forming process and equipment technology to manufacture the Cap Can closure assembly. ARCO Aluminum, with headquarters in Louisville, KY, will be the single-source supplier of coil aluminum sheet for production of the dome and decorated cap components of the can. Once complete, the JOLT Battery Bottles are shipped to Pri-Pak, an independent beverage co-packer located in Lawrenceburg, IN, where they are filled with the JOLT product. Rexam worked in partnership with Pri-Pak to develop a unique and flexible filling process for this exclusive beverage package.
