Sidel delivers complete beer packaging solution line to Damm

Sidel and Spanish brewer Damm have teamed up on a cutting edge beer packaging line and complex project of integrated logistics.

Last February, Damm, Spain’s beer market leader, ordered a complete line for its El Prat de Llobregat facility near Barcelona. The packaging line will produce different brands of beer in 33 and 50 cl cans at a rate of 90,000 cans per hour. High points of the deal include an innovative electronic volumetric can filler, the Starcans FM, and a complex integrated logistics project.

Logistics solution clinches the deal
At this plant, where 6 lines operate simultaneously, it was Sidel’s innovative packaging logistics proposals that clinched the deal. The solution covers all of the customer’s requirements, from the depalletizer to finished product storage, for all lines in the facility.

The project features the Freeway* system from Elettric 80, a Sidel partner offering innovative end of line logistics solutions. Ten LGVs (Laser Guided Vehicles) serve the palletizers and wrapping zones transporting finished products to elevators that transfer goods from the second floor to the first floor. Next, eight more LGVs pick up the products and carry them to the automatic truck loading bays for transfer to the warehouse located 15 kilometers from the production facility. This extremely fast and flexible logistics organization guarantees optimum packaging line accessibility enabling operators to cross unobstructed palletizing zones at any time. The system transports 6,744 pallets every day.

A flexible, innovative line
The line delivered by Sidel includes an innovative electronic volumetric can filler, the Starcans FM. This rotary filler is specially designed for high speed beer and carbonated drink packaging lines. It uses electropneumatic valves equipped with flow meters, which determine the volume of product in the can before filling. This guarantees greater level precision, which increases product savings.

The line is also equipped with a Sweep Off A/U depalletizer, a Pama pasteurizer, conveyor belts for empty and full cans and cans in packs, and two Robokombi palletizers. Designed to produce various brands of beer in different can sizes, this ultra-modern packaging line is extremely flexible. Time between cycles and format changeover times are minimized. The line is currently being assembled and production start-up is scheduled for the end of the year.

The Damm Group manufactures and distributes drinks, mainly beer, for the Spanish market.
