First plastics aftermarket for aircraft interiors

Plastics resin manufacturer and plastics molder identify key components need for the aviation and aeronautics industry.

Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. and Magee Plastics
announced recently a first for the aviation and aeronautics industry in the high-performance plastics aftermarket offering commercial airlines Radel* R and Torlon* plastic components. In helping Delta Air Lines recently with its Cabin Conditioning Program, an ambitious fleet refurbishment, the performance plastics resin manufacturer and the performance plastics molder identified a key need within the industry.

While a secondary aftermarket has existed for years for a host of component metal and composite parts, as well as mid-range and commodity plastics for aircraft, a carrier’s only option for performance plastic parts was through the plane’s manufacturer. When one considers the thousands of high-performance plastic components used in an aircraft, the cost savings and streamlined efficiencies delivered via an aftermarket quickly add up for an airline’s bottom-line operations.

“When we looked at refurbishing our fleet we focused in on maximizing our investment,” commented John Laughter, Vice President, Maintenance & Operations for Delta Air Lines. “Working with Magee Plastics and Solvay Advanced Polymers, we were able to realize considerable cost savings by having a source of quality, specified performance plastic parts. The cabin is one of the most important aspects of any carrier’s customer interaction. It is the impression you leave with your customer. It’s critical to have a supplier that meets our quality expectations.”

Magee Plastics, recognized for excellence in PMA components and FAA certification, is a premier manufacturing company, with strengths in custom engineering and certification, serving the OEM and refurbishment markets in the airline industry with top-quality components and interior products made from thermoplastics and composites.

The replacement parts cover air return grilles, window assemblies, dado panels and a host of other items molded out of Solvay Advanced Polymers’ high-performance Radel R and Torlon specialty polymers. These leading-edge plastics can accommodate custom colors, deliver unmatched performance and help decrease weight in an aircraft’s cabin. From the flight deck to the service cart, the companies have created an alternative marketplace supplying the industry a comprehensive offering. The parts are FAA approved as well as PMA-certified, meeting aircraft manufacturer part specifications.

“Our aftermarket efforts will now allow access to the most advanced plastics available,” explained Jason Ross, Business Manager for Solvay Advanced Polymers. “Customers will no longer be limited to outdated technology that doesn’t meet the performance, load-weight and cost realities of today. We’re pleased to partner with a customer and a company as respected as Magee Plastics to make it a reality.”
