Provider Active in Nigerian
School Feeding Programme
Seattle, WA, USA--(Jobwerx News)--Provider of preferred processing and
packaging solutions for food, helps Nigerian authorities to create school
feeding project infrastructure.
On 27th September 2005, Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo launched
the Nasarawa State School Feeding Programme at the Laminga Primary School.
The Programme is fully funded and administered by the State of Nasarawa,
which makes it a unique model in Africa today. Tetra Pak West Africa and
Tetra Pak's Food for Development Office have been supporting the Programme
since its inception, functioning as a technical advisor to the Nasarawa
State School Feeding Committee.
Tetra Pak's knowledge and many years of experience from School Feeding
around the world have helped the State authorities in creating the project
infrastructure. This effort was recognized by Nasarawa State Governor
Alhanji (Dr.) Abdullahi Adamu who in his speech expressed gratitude for
Tetra Pak's total commitment to the project and underlined that it "had
gone far beyond the call of business relationship."
Combating childhood malnutrition
The Nasarawa State School Feeding Programme is the first step in a wider
effort by President Obasanjo to make school feeding available to children
across the country. The President mentioned that almost half of children
ages 7-13 in Nigeria are underweight, and he repeated his intention to
improve the nutritional situation for Nigeria's children through school
feeding programmes throughout the country. The goal is to reach 27 million
children during the coming 10 years.
Improving health and cheerfulness
The programme distributes a heavily fortified maize and soy based drink,
delivered in a Tetra Pak package. The headmaster of a school in Lafia
that has been part of the pilot phase says that the children have become
more energetic and cheerful, and are already showing signs of health improvements.
The product is imported from South Africa, but a second round of trials
on formulations based on Nigerian raw materials has already been completed.
This progress towards a switch to local production was praised by President
Obasanjo who states that "The Federal Government will fully support the
processes that will facilitate early domestication of the food supplement
using our local raw materials."
A catalyst for local development
Tetra Pak Vice President Claes Du Rietz also touched upon the catalytic
role of the Nasarawa School Feeding Programme: "This school feeding programme
is the first component in an integrated chain to promote sustainable agricultural
and industrial development in Nigeria. It will generate demand for locally
produced foodstuffs which will lead to an increase in employment and income
for local farmers, industry and distributors." He went on to underline
the commitment of the Tetra Pak Group to support the further development
of school feeding and agricultural development in Nigeria.
International partners
The Programme has attracted international attention from development organisations,
donors and private companies. Among the partners already engaged in activities
linked to the Programme is the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition,
Helen Keller International, University of Toronto, USAIDs Compass Project,
Good Hope International and The Solae Company.
