Packaging Materials
ITX Free
Tetra Pak confirms most packaging material available by year end will
be ITX free, one month ahead of schedule.
The European Food and Safety Authority's opinon on the possible health
risks of ITX released today concludes that ITX "does not give cause for
health concern at levels reported." Tetra Pak is reassured by this opinion
and similar statements by other authorities that have looked into the
safety of ITX.
Nevertheless, Tetra Pak, part of the Tetra
Laval Group ,
believes that any possible migration of substances should be minimised.
We have already supplied ITX free packages for infant milk since the end
of September. In addition, we have committed to the EU authorities to
eliminate any possible migration of ITX from material produced after 31st
December 2005 for fatty products and 31st January, 2006 for juices. We
can now confirm that most packaging material available from 31st December,
2005 will be ITX free, one month ahead of schedule.
As soon as authorities identified the presence of ITX in infant milk,
Tetra Pak, took immediate action
and made a thorough analysis of available data on ITX. On September 19,
we committed to start the process to move away from inks including ITX.
The presence of ITX is linked to UV inks used in offset printing; a technology
used for many years by numerous food products and packaging companies.
Safety has the highest priority in Tetra Pak and we have had a long history
of holding our packages and packaging equipment to the highest standard
of food quality and safety in the industry. We have been open and transparent
with the authorities and our customers and will continue to share any
information that is made available to us. We appreciate the efforts of
the European authorities in prioritizing this issue to reassure the European
consumers, says Jörgen Haglind, Senior Vice President, Communications,
Tetra Pak.
Tetra Pak today supplies hundreds of different types of carton packaging
formats. Tetra Pak is committed to making food safe and available, everywhere.
The company believes in responsible industry leadership, creating profitable
growth in harmony with environmental sustainability and good corporate
citizenship.
Tetra Pak is one of three independent industry groups that belong to the
Tetra Laval Group. The other two are DeLaval
and Sidel .
Tetra Laval is a private industrial group of Swedish origin headquartered
in Switzerland.
