2006-11-10 News Release
Overwheling response for Light Sport Aircraft The proof of concept aircraft is on display at this year's Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Expo November 9-11 in Palm Springs, Calif.
The flight test program for Cessna's Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) concept
is on track, and Jack J. Pelton, Chairman, President and Chief Executive
Officer of Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. company, says his team
remains on schedule to make a decision about going forward with the program
in the first quarter of 2007.
Cessna's flying proof-of-concept LSA model has made more than 11 flights, accumulating more than 20 hours in the air. "We've explored the flight envelope and basic handling characteristics," Pelton said. "The fundamental airplane design is looking good." Pelton said Cessna continues to study the sales and distribution alternatives that would be needed if the program moves forward, as well as manufacturing options. "Overall, the business case is looking promising, and the responses we've received from our current customers and potential new customers has been overwhelmingly favorable," Pelton said. "In addition to general market feedback, we've asked for input from our Cessna Pilot Center flight school network, and representatives have said this would be a good fit for their flight training needs." . Cessna announced its intentions to study the feasibility of developing and producing an LSA June 6, 2006. The proof-of-concept aircraft made its first flight Oct. 13, 2006, only nine months after the first metal was cut. . Cessna's LSA proof-of-concept features a high wing spanning 30 feet, side-by-side seating for two in a cabin with a maximum width of 48 inches (a half-foot more than the ubiquitous Cessna 152), tricycle gear, and a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine. . Cessna's sport aircraft concept incorporates dual control sticks, upward opening doors, toe brakes, and a castering nose wheel. Construction is primarily of aluminum, with selective use of composite parts in the cowl, wing and dorsal fin. . The newly-emerging LSA category is the highest-growth sector of general aviation. Light Sport Aircraft are defined as having a maximum gross weight of 1,320 pounds, maximum level-flight speed of 120 knots, and no more than two seats. The Aircraft
